Amherst, MA Mixed-Use Retail and Residential
Sited on a 1.5-acre parcel north of downtown Amherst, MA, this project takes advantage of some very innovative zoning which was designed to create a new offshoot of downtown Amherst close to the University of Massachusetts Amherst campus. Consisting of 16,000 square feet of mixed-use retail and sixty-eight apartments, the project faces East Pleasant street, with a visual link and pedestrian access to the heart of the interior of the project via a courtyard/outdoor dining space. An aerial connector links the two buildings, and a fifth-floor outdoor patio provides a gathering place for the residents which overlooks Kendall Park across the street. Balconies on the prominent corners provide visual anchors and valuable outdoor space for some of the units. The buildings are designed to complement the historic architecture of Amherst, while maintaining a contemporary look and feel. A 4000 square foot building behind the main buildings anchors the interior landscaped area and provides space for a restaurant, café, bakery or coffee shop.
